August 21, 2006- Paul with a thorn

Today's reading at ODB is from 2 Corithians 12 : 7-10. Apostle Paul, the great servant of God, has asked the Lord to remove the thorn in his flesh 3 times. But the Lord didn't give Paul what he asked for - removal of his thorn, but what he needed to be reminded of at all times - "My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness."

To take this further, why Paul needed to be reminded of his weakenss and God's grace all the time ? I once heard a sermon which interpreted that because Paul is such a great apostle, as a human, pride easily entangles. To prevent Paul from slowly drifting away in his powerful and great service for the Lord, a thorn in his body serves as a constant reminder that he is indeed in need of the grace of his Lord.

To me, I got different thorns in my life at different times - sickness, backpain, failures at work, disappointed relationships..., they are all for the purpose of taking away my pride. PTL !
